GRAPHIC MEDITATIONS

In the course of attending many faculty meeting while a professor of Architecture at the University of Maine, I would often “doodle” during more uninteresting parts of the get-together.  The “doodles” I created starting taking on a life of their own, as my co- workers asked for them to be framed and hung in their offices… As a result, I began working on them as stream-of-consciousness graphic expressions…

During these meetings I drew them with whatever implement I had from ball point pen to soft pencil, or markers…I began experimenting with pastel and sometimes I would generate one that excited me…

They are “seeded” drawings much like “seeded” meditation, in which the meditator starts with a mantra or some subject matter…I start with a simple line or shape which suggests the next step and i get my own critical consciousness out-of-the-way, and let them evolve as they may…the seed may even be a bad drawing of something that i want to hide and it transforms into something completely different…

At other times I will write out a word and then that becomes the seed and the drawing grows from there

They are fun to do, and I never know where they will lead…and some of them actually turn out to be quite satisfying to my artistic sense and eye…
